Why Has My Window Gone Cloudy?

Double glazed windows contain two panes of glass sealed together with a gap between them. Inside that gap is a desiccant — a moisture absorbing material that keeps the air between the panes dry and clear.

Over time the seal around the edge of the unit degrades. Once it fails, damp air gets in, the desiccant becomes saturated and condensation starts forming between the panes. No amount of cleaning will fix it — the seal is gone and the unit needs replacing.

The good news is you don't need a whole new window. The frame is almost always perfectly sound. We simply remove the old glass unit and fit a new one — at a fraction of the cost of full window replacement.

Estimates are for standard clear double glazed units in existing external beaded uPVC frames. Obscure glass, Georgian bars, toughened glass and other specifications may vary. We confirm your exact price after measuring — always before ordering.

Do I Need a Whole New Window?

Almost certainly not. The vast majority of misted windows have frames that are completely sound — it's only the glass unit inside that has failed.

Replacing just the glass unit costs a fraction of a full window replacement and achieves exactly the same result — a clear, thermally efficient, weatherproof window with a fresh guarantee.

We'll always tell you honestly if a frame is beyond saving. In those cases we can quote for full replacement through our FENSA registered partner — but in our experience that's the exception, not the rule.

Got More Than One Misted Window?

Most properties we visit have more than one affected unit — it's very common for multiple windows to fail around the same time as the property ages.

The more units you have the better value the job becomes. We batch all measurements in one visit, order all glass together and fit everything on a single return visit. Less disruption for you, better value all round.

We work regularly with landlords and letting agents managing entire property portfolios — if you have multiple properties with misted windows get in touch and we'll put together a programme of works.

Common Questions About Misted Windows

The glass unit needs replacing — there's no way to reseal a failed unit. But replacing just the glass is straightforward and affordable, and in almost all cases the frame stays exactly as it is.
Most standard casement windows take 20–30 minutes to complete. We can typically replace several units in a single visit.
For the measuring visit yes — we need access to the windows. For the fitting visit it depends on the property. Many landlords simply provide access and we report back when done.
You don't need to — that's what our measure visit is for. Just send us a photo and rough description and we'll handle the rest.
